Local Nature Recovery Strategies are helping England’s nature to recover by connecting and restoring habitats for biodiversity and communities. Hull and East Yorkshire Local Nature Partnership asked us to develop a suite of eye-catching visuals for their report, that could also be used as marketing materials to encourage the general public to find out more about their work.
Our series of illustrations highlights the key features of each unique habitat type in Hull & East Yorkshire, from rolling Wolds to chalk rivers. Then the three-minute animation introduces these habitats and the wider Hull & East Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Network. Perfect for a general audience interested in conservation in their local area. The visual style builds on our previous film series for Yorkshire Marine Nature Partnership, also about nature recovery in Yorkshire, keeping a consistent look and feel for their nature recovery messaging.
We developed visuals of specific wildlife and geographical features that make East Yorkshire unique. The teams illustrated the species that are important to the region, with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accuracy of the smallest details, from fur colours to bird calls. Spot the pink-footed goose and sleeping adder. These pepper the report, giving the readers unique insight into the key features of the strategy.
The animation accompanies the report, giving an introduction to local nature recovery networks in Hull and East Yorkshire. This illustrates and explains complex concepts and challenges in a straightforward way. Where the report may feel intimidating to the general public, the animation aims to make the key messaging accessible so more people have their say in how to make this amazing county wilder for the future. HEY Local Nature Partnership have been sharing the animation to promote their public consultation and encourage people to get involved in shaping the final strategy.
People are central to local nature recovery. A wide range of individuals and organisations make up Hull and East Yorkshire’s wildlife recovery network. And improving these landscapes benefits the communities that live and work there too. To reflect this, we developed a set of bold characters that fit seamlessly with the existing style, adding details and flourishes to each person to capture the diversity of the community in Hull and East Yorkshire.
The designs put the diversity of the region front and centre, accurately representing the iconic habitats. Bringing these together, we built up rich visuals that quickly show the breadth of unique environments and the people and wildlife that live there. This brings the concept of a ‘nature recovery network’ to life and helps people understand how these habitats interact with each other.
The animation and illustrations were produced for HEY Local Nature Partnership in collaboration with their charitable partner East Riding of Yorkshire Council, North York Moors Trust and funders Environment Agency as part of the Championing Coastal Coordination fund.
